I found my camera again
Simple glimmer #8
Since I had my son, I haven’t takne photos with my dslr camera, as I used to. In a time of learning and transition, I surrendered to Sara Tasker’s words, that the best camera you have is the one you have on you. However, lately I missed the detail, the depth, the colours, the magic of making a photo I love, and not just settling for the iPhone camera, which is very good but it doesn’t replace a lens for me.
So, I decided to charge my batteries and I find my trusted Canon M3 from 2016, which I have taken so many places, including random walks in Copenhagen and around Denmark, Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands, to Havana, Prague, London, Dublin, Lisbon and Alentejo, Tuscany, NYC and Finland. It has survived rain, snow, frost, sun, dust and damp.
Yesterday morning, we went on walk in the forest and I packed my forgotten companion. We got out of the car, backpack with snacks and water on my back, then I took the cap off and I hung my camera on my shoulder. I felt that old excitement in my hands as I felt possibility and fun in this ritual I have had for so many years.
I could see my son was curious too, and when he is older I want him to ask me for a camera rather than a phone to take photos.
This was wonderful. The not instant checking how the photo looked, no notifications popping in, the feeling of quality instead of feeling a bit disappointed at not being able to capture exactly what I wanted. I felt happy and in a state of noticing. I felt present. I felt magic.
Surprisingly, I ended up taking far less photos than usual and I was a lot happier with the result. So, from now on my camera has a fixed residency in my backpack, together with my journal, even if it is a bit heavier.
